Day 0: Sydney with 1 sleep to go
Well it’s been a 2-and-a-half year wait to get to this holiday, so it had better be good.
We are arriving a few days ahead of when the Antarctica adventure actually begins in case of any delays in arriving. I must have known that Auckland ( through which we are flying) would be lashed by Cyclone Gabrielle today and tomorrow!!!

Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent in terms of total area. (It is larger than aboth Oceania and Europe.) Antarctica is a unique continent in that it does not have a native human population. There are no countries in Antarctica, although seven nations claim different parts of it: New Zealand, Australia, France, Norway, the United Kingdom, Chile, and Argentina.

Antarctic Ice Sheet
The Antarctic Ice Sheet dominates the region. It is the largest single piece of ice on Earth. This ice sheet even extends beyond the continent when snow and ice are at their most extreme.
The ice surface dramatically grows in size from about three million square kilometers (1.2 million square miles) at the end of summer to about 19 million square kilometers (7.3 million square miles) by winter.
Ice sheets are so large that they radically alter the landscape of the continents they cover. The weight of the ice sheet depresses the land beneath it. Without its ice sheet, the continent of Antarctica would shrink by more than a quarter, as most of its western half sinks into the sea. A cutaway view on this map illustrates this.

That’s all for now….just testing whether I can remember how to do and send a blog
