July 5: Stavanger – the summer house
An addendum to yesterday’s blog….here’s us leaving our lovely hotel in Bergen, and a picture for those who don’t know what a troll looks like!

A bit of an explanation of the summer house concept in Norway. They are called “hytte” ( pronounced “hooter”). There are many, many thousands of cabins, cottages and lodges all over Norway. In fact, Norway’s cabin culture has been described as a national obsession. There are 440,000 of them for Norway’s 5 million people. Originally a hytte was a very basic log cabin with no running water or electricity. Today hytte refers to a wooden holiday cottage.
Chris and Tone’s hytte is within a gated community. All the cottages have the same floor area but are done in different designs. Their hytte comes with a permanent spot on the marina, as well as a shed for storing boating things. The views from every room are sensational.

And wouldn’t this shot want to make you buy the place (if you saw it in a real estate brochure) or book it (if it was on AirBnB)!

Here’s Chris and Tone preparing stuff for lunch. Chris has a gadget which converts a whole zucchini into spaghetti type strips. And Tone turned the ingredients into a delicious creamy prawn and zucchini pasta.

Chris drove us around the local area which is a dream for hikers as there are so many trails to explore.

It’s very peaceful here. Occasionally you see a helicopter flying over to see Pulpit Rock where Tom Cruise filmed one of the Mission Impossible movies.
Another lovely day in paradise!
