Music use in Japan

This kettle sings to you when it has finished boiling. Sammy (music authority extraordinaire) says the piece being played is “Bach minuet in G” , however the kettle is playing it in F. And actually its not by Bach. So the piece of music is ”Not Bach minuet in Not G! ” Got it?

The Imperial Hotel in Tokyo has a bath which automatically fills and when it is filled, it plays ”Ode to Joy” to let you know that its ready.

Shrine etiquette

When one decides to make a donation to the gods at a shrine, there is an etiquette that is required.

First one approaches the gift-box or equivalent and puts/throws money into the box.

Take a step back and then bow twice to the shrine with hands joined in front.

Then clap hands twice.

Bow twice more.

Back away and depart.

There will be tax exemption certificate by email.

And if you are really keen ( like Les), you can collect a stamp from every shrine in Japan

Interesting store names

Japanese toilets

These are a real experience. All of them have a range of functions from bidets to music (to cover up any unwanted noise) to warm seats ( not sure i liked this feature as it felt like someone had left their ”warmth” behind). And here are the provisions for children

Mothers can place their children in these high chairs affixed to the wall
