Lake St Clair

Hobart to Lake St Clair

Our guide Jon picked us up from the Henry Jones art hotel at 7.15 am, and our first stop was Mount Field national park, 64 kms from Hobart. Founded in 1916, it is Tasmania’s oldest national park and its landscape ranges from eucalyptus rainforest to alpine moorland.

Here we did a 6 km walk right up into the alpine moorland to see Lake Dobson and Lake Seal.

Stopped for a cuppa in one of the alpine lodges

then we went to visit one of the famous falls in the national park, Russell Falls. Along the track we found, unusually, a rack of clothes and a pile of fashion shoes. This was for a photo shoot which was underway!

Arrived at Pumphouse point on lake st Clair around 4 pm. Very quirky hotel, restored from pump houses owned by the Hydro Electric Commission. There are just 18 suites in the complex and our rooms were perched at the end of the jetty overlooking Lake St Clair.

Dinner was at shared tables so the first night we met Karen , Paul and Bill, Karen’s 88 year old dad who can still walk kms each day.

a beautiful sunset shared with a wallaby and a wombat

Jim found an article in the Guardian about a spectacular aurora which turned the night sky pink. It was caused by a geomagnetic storm on the sun which sent particles streaming towards Earth and caused the luminous display. That’s a good enough explanation for me ( even though it happened a couple of days after our glorious sunset!)

BTW, very comfy beds!
