Hello from the Northern Hemisphere

Day 14: Little Island in Scoresbysund

This was my view when I lifted my blockout blind this morning (Dina, I left the blockout blind up one night but didn’t see anything while asleep!)

Today we did a zodiac landing on Little Island. This island was inhabited by the Tunumiit, one of the Inuit tribes from East Greenland. They built subterranean houses with sealskin roofs, and with corridors leading to the outside. You can still see remains of this very primitive construction. I’m sure it’s obvious to you that the subterranean house is the picture on the left, and the corridor on the right!

They had amazing waterfront properties! This was their view

The island is inhabited by muskox, reindeer, polar bears and arctic foxes.

Didn’t manage to sight a muskox, but did manage to find their poo and their hair (caught on bushes) so I know you would be keen to see pictures of these!

As always, some huge icebergs were in view.

While we were on the island, an arctic fox ran by us and found something nice to eat.

Yes, yes..it looks like a human hand but we think it’s a sea flipper. The fox was completely oblivious to our presence.

The polar plunge took place in the afternoon. Cold and rainy. The ship had to move twice during the event…once because there was too much sea ice, the other because we heard the nearish iceberg crack and they needed to move further away from it. One of the crew dressed up as a penguin (even though penguins don’t exist in the Arctic!)

Last night, I went to the “Night market” (James, Anne and Terry know what I’m talking about). It caters for 10 guests and the chef explains how each of the 7 courses are prepared, and you can watch him prepare them. It was a middle eastern menu(Ang, you would have hated it!) and here’s a sample.

The dessert was AMAZING. A baklava with layers of yoghurt and pistachio ice cream, filo pastry and topped with honey soaked pistachios!

And here are my Trivia buddies… two different groups who I float between!
