Day 12: Cruising Scoresbysund

We’re cruising in Greenland’s Scoresbysund on the east coast. The morning zodiac outing was a cruise around Bear Islands. Very dramatic scenery, amazing icebergs and a glorious sunny day.

The bottom photo on the left looks like a white ship….its actually an iceberg.

We managed to see a few muskox. These creatures are the largest land based mammals in Greenland, with long shaggy hair, thick hooves and horned faces. Musk oxen can weigh up to 400 kilos. What makes them so unique is their long, brown, shaggy coats. Contributing to the bulk, their fur is actually double-layered for insulation against the cold.
The long hairs – called guard hairs – make up the outer layer of their fur and is shed near the end of winter. Underneath is a shorter, fuzzier layer of fur, wool which is commonly harvested into clothing or crafts by local Greenlandic people. This is one of the reasons that they are hunted; the other for their lean meat – considered a “gourmet delicacy”.

In the afternoon we landed on Jyttes Havn. Spectacular scenery and geology

It’s been quite warm today …10 deg C, and the sun has amplified the beauty of the landscape (wildlife sightings have been very limited)
