June 12: Toulouse to Krakow
The balloons were up and around to farewell us.

We left Castelnaud La Chapelle at 7.30 am to drive to Toulouse Airport for our trip to Krakow.
It’s a 2 hr 15 minute drive which gave us plenty of time….however, we didn’t account for road blockages – BARREE. Yicks! Somehow Jim navigated a series of side roads to get around the barree, and we made it to the airport on time.
My first experience of flying RyanAir (and hopefully my last). They measure the cabin baggage in a machine, and if your bag doesn’t quite fit, they charge you 75 euros to put it in the hold. My backpack made it, as did Jim’s luggage, but Deena’s was 1 inch too wide! ( fortunately, I had inadvertently booked for 2 cabin bags when I only had one, so Deena used my “credit”).
Flight to Krakow was 2.5 hours and we didn’t need to go through passport control as Poland is part of the Schengen (a group of European countries with no internal border checks).
Lovely and sunny in Krakow. Time for a short walk to the Main Square. Called Rynek Glowny, it is one of the most famous and impressive squares in Europe. Located in Kraków’s Old Town right at the centre of the city, it was created in 1257 after the city was rebuilt. Its size makes it one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe, and it’s been the main public space for more than 750 years, and survived intact from WWII.

The carriages with white horses take tourists around the Old town.

We went to a restaurant in the Old Town for dinner….herrings, pickles, mushrooms in cream, and of course potato dumplings (called Silesian dumplings
Silesian dumplings are potato-based dumplings from the Silesia region . They are made mainly from boiled potatoes+potato+salt. They’re part of a broader family of Polish “kluski” (dumplings), but have their own unique identity.
These dumplings are instantly recognisable: they are round and slightly flattened, with a small indentation in the centre which helps the dumpling cook evenly, it also acts like a little cup to hold gravy!

That’s all for today…..
